The Champions Gate and Loughman areas have undergone rapid development in the last few years. Unfortunately, the roads haven't kept pace, leading to several areas where traffic backs up. Here's a few tips to avoiding some frustrating delays.
Disney Avoiding I-4
Traffic going to and on I-4 during the morning rush hour is very busy and frustrating. If your going to one of the Disney attractions, you can avoid I-4 altogether by using the Osceola Parkway entrance or getting on at World Drive from the 192 (click on a route to see directions).
South on Old Lake Wilson
From 5pm to 8pm on weekdays, Old Lake Wilson Rd backs up for about a mile at the junction with 532. If you want to avoid a 20 minute delay, take the route below using Sinclair Rd, 429 and I-4 (click the route to see directions). It uses I-4, which is backed up too at the same time, but you’re getting on it for just a mile where the traffic is just starting to flow again, so its not too bad.
North On Old Lake Wilson
During the morning rush hour, from around 7:30am to 9am, Old Lake Wilson randomly backs up for about a mile to Ronald Reagan Parkway. If you want to avoid this, take a detour through Heritage pass.
Northeast I-4 At Lake Buena Vista
If your heading out to Universal or Seaworld or other Orlando attractions, you'll encounter a 10 minute delay Mon-Sat at Lake Buena Vista throughout the morning. If you want to avoid 2 miles of stop-and-go, use the route below through Disney (click on the route for directions). It takes about the same amount of time, but there are interesting things along the way and it feels shorter.
Southwest I-4 At Champions Gate
If your heading back from Orlando or any of the attractions in the evening, you'll encounter a 4 mile slow down tailing back from Champions Gate Blvd. There are long ways round this, but they take so long that its best to avoid the stop-and-go by getting in the right hand lane early and and keeping a steady 20-30mph. If you really want to avoid this slow down, you can use one of the routes shown below, but even these routes have minor issues during week-day rush hours.
